Kiruna is located in the north of Sweden, 145 kilometers (90 miles) north of the Arctic Circle. The city center is above the Torne river in the north and the Kalix River in the south, on the “Haukavaara” hill at an altitude of 530 m and near the lake Luossajärvi.
The area around Kiruna is very sparsely populated. Doesn't it feel good? You can get back together with the people you met and then continue your communication in the morning from where you left off in the evening.
To the northwest, west, and southwest of Kiruna are the Scandinavian mountains visible from the city center.
I'm thinking, doesn't it make you feel strange to know that sparsely populated places exist in such an era, even more, the thought of being there? It's like time just stood there.
Everything is waiting for you to come and discover all the beauties before they fade. You will probably feel more deeply how amazing the world is while you are there.
Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest mountain, is 75 kilometers (47 miles) from the city center and can be seen from Kiruna.
About 15 km east of Kiruna, on the Torne River, particularly at Jukkasjärvi, is the oldest known ice hotel facility, including those in Scandinavia and North America. The construction of the hotel begins towards the end of October every year. Tourists from all over the world come to this hotel to experience this moment at least once in their lifetime. This hotel is being rebuilt over and over again every year, can you imagine?
If you are traveling by car; Kiruna can be reached via the E10 road.
A short road connects to Kurravaara on the Torne river and ends there.
Another road connects Kiruna with Nikkaluokta close to Kebnekaise and is used by tourists to get to the mountains. It passes by or near several villages in the Kalix river valley.
Buses connect Kiruna to major towns in Norrbotten province and nearby villages in the wider region.
You can get to the points w
here the buses pass by walking approximately 1.5 km from the airport. However, I suggest you think twice before imagining it as if you are walking in the park near your house
The railway connects Luleå to Gällivare, Kiruna and Narvik. Despite being built to serve the mine, the Swedish Rail continues to run daily passenger traffic on the line. There is a night train from Narvik to Stockholm, a day train from Narvik to Luleå (connected by a second night train to Stockholm and Gothenburg), and trains to Luleå and Narvik, starting and ending in Kiruna.
The latter is known as Karven and is popular for day trips to the mountains near Abisko, Björkliden, and Riksgränsen. Especially in winter, these are the places preferred by tourists who want to see the northern lights, attention!
Additionally, long-distance trains are operated by Transdev during the summer months. There is a free shuttle bus for every departure and arrival starting from Kiruna bus station in the city center.
Kiruna Airport is located in the southeast of the city, 8 km by road. Several daily flights connect Kiruna to Stockholm directly or via Luleå or Umeå. Airport buses are available for all flights to and from Stockholm-Arlanda Airport.
